Marriott International will be completely eliminating tiny, single-use toiletry bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel by 2020 and will be replacing them with larger pump-topped bottles, the group announced, according to sister publication Hotelier Middle East.
So far, the property has rolled out larger bottles in around 1,000 properties in North America, but more are expected to follow suit by the end of 2019.
When implemented at all properties across the globe, the programme is expected to prevent the use of 500 million bottles annually, which is a 30% annual reduction from their current amenity plastic usage, the property announced.
“This is our second global initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastics in just over a year, which underscores how important we believe it is to continuously find ways to reduce our hotels’ environmental impact. It’s a huge priority for us,” said Arne Sorenson, president and chief executive officer of Marriott International.
