It’s been a buzz word for the past few years but it looks like the all-encompassing term used for skin care and cosmetic products from South Korea is here to stay.

Middle East Beauty contributor Gemma Ward caught up with Kate Wooyeon Park, CEO of Lamise Beauty, a Dubai based Korean cosmetic store, to find out more.

You recently launched Lamise Beauty. Tell us about the concept and why you founded it.
Lamise Beauty is a Korean cosmetics shop based in Dubai. Lamise’s motto is “Skin care first” because we believe that the foundation of beauty is through skin care. We are trying to listen to our skin and to make sure it is always strong, through a healthy diet, exercise and of course, high quality cosmetics. Lamise, which means ‘soft touch’ in Arabic, explains our ethos which is to help you achieve healthier skin with a soft touch through our Korean beauty products.

What sets you apart from other K-Beauty Brands?
I personally met with over 13 brands in Korea such as Huxley, CosRX, JM Solution and Mediheal. I tested them all on my skin first and brought an eclectic selection of 120 products made with a wide selection of ingredients such as sea buckthorn, cactus, avocado, Harakeke flower and moringa. I think the key of Korean beauty is to find the right products for your skin concern and to make your own skin care ritual. So I curated various products suitable for customers who have different skin types like dry, oily, acne prone, sensitive and combination skin. You can create your own skin care ritual with our products.

Why do you think there has been an influx of interest into Korean beauty products?
Having worked in the advertising industry for seven years, I have worked with many beauty brands and had the opportunity to test many trendy products from both Korean and non-Korean companies. There are many great cosmetic products produced outside of Korea but in my experience, Korean brands offer very high quality that has been backed by decades of innovation in technology, formulas and ingredients. Through continuous research and becoming pioneers of popular products such as BB cream, cushion compacts and sheet masks, Korean beauty products captured the attention of many cosmetic enthusiasts all over the world in the past 10 years.

How can consumers ensure that K-Beauty products are authentic? Are there any key pointers to look out for on the packaging?
There are many fake Korean beauty products in the market that copy the original packaging and look genuine.
Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure that the products are originally from the manufacturers. In order to ensure this, I visit the suppliers in Korea several times a year and request documents that have been approved by the government.

There always seem to be so many steps when following a K-Beauty skin care regime, why is this? Do you think it is necessary to follow each step or are there a few specific products that can be used in conjunction with your everyday skin care regime?
Each of us has different skin types and concerns but we all want to have healthy and glowing skin, which is smooth textured, moisturised and bouncy. The core of Korean beauty is not merely doing a 10-step skin care routine every day, it is more about truly understanding your skin and building your own skin care routine. It is very important to pick the right products for cleansing, moisturising and protecting your skin. Deep cleansing is an essential procedure in the morning and at the end of the day. In the evening, it is very important to clean your makeup with cleansing water, oil or balm and to wash your face using a foam cleanser. This cleans impurities, dirt and clogged pores from excessive sebum. It also prepares the skin for moisturisers as the cleansers make it dehydrated. Dry skin causes irritation, inflammation and it gives a look of roughness and fine lines on the surface. Regardless of your skin type this is why you should continuously give nutrients and hydrate your skin using an essence and a cream. Lastly, you should protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Using sunscreen helps tighten the look of your skin and reduces fine lines. If you want to improve your skin texture, you can add an exfoliator once or twice a week and mask packs for intensive hydration.

What are the skin care steps that consumers should be following on a regular basis?
I use a cleansing oil or cleansing water and cleansing foam for facial wash. After that, I use toner and apply serum and cream. For protecting the skin from strong sunlight, I apply sunscreen every day. Before applying makeup, I use mask packs for extra hydration once or twice a week. Finally, once a week I use exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and clean out my pores.

Do you have any nutritional pointers that you believe helps keep your skin in tip top condition?
What we eat is strongly linked to our skin. To build healthy skin you need amino acids, vitamins and minerals. I try to eat lots of vegetables and fruits that contain antioxidants and vitamins as they help to protect skin from cellular damage and support healthy skin growth. I drink a lot of water to hydrate the body and skin and try to reduce sugar intake.

Where do you distribute your products? Can they currently be purchased online?
They can be purchased at Lamise Beauty which is located inside 1004 Gourmet in the Onyx Tower Level P2, in the bustling community of the Greens and with easy access to some of Dubai’s most central areas, including JLT and Dubai Marina. In addition, in November 2017 I started a website LamiseBeauty.com. Our products (including my own mask pack brand Willow) can be bought on the site.

Willow face mask.

Do you have any other stores in the region or worldwide?
For the moment, we only have one shop in Dubai however, we do have plans to open more satellite branches of Lamise Beauty in the near future.

Do you have any plans to expand on your product offering?
The Korean cosmetics market continuously evolves. It is our responsibility to keep a pulse on the market and understand current and future trends on behalf of our customers. As a result, we try to bring in new products to Dubai on a regular basis.
