Dr. Hoda Makkaw is a consultant of family medicine and integrative holistic medicine, Euromed Clinic Center Dubai Clinical as well as an associate professor at Georgetown University.
I grew up in Lebanon but during the war my family moved to Egypt. I went to medical school in Alexandria before attending the American University of Beirut. After graduating, I moved to the USA to specialise in family medicine where I achieved American Board certification in both family medicine and integrative holistic medicine. I worked at different hospitals before establishing my private clinic in Virginia before relocating to Dubai.
I had studied alternative therapies such as acupuncture and herbal treatments. One day, I received a letter with details about a conference, training and an exam for American Board of integrative holistic medicine. Once I completed this, I knew exactly what my passion was and the path I should follow. That was to heal people by integrating both traditional and alternative treatments.
JT Foxx the world’s number one wealth and business coach is a huge inspiration to me. He believes the greatest investment in the world is to invest in ourselves and that the most valuable asset is the mind so we should continuously nourish it. From him, I have learnt to become goal-oriented, work out what it takes to reach my goal and ensure I am resilient, flexible and have great perseverance.
Although approved by medical research, a decade ago holistic practices such as acupuncture and bio identical hormones weren’t given a seal of approval by traditional medics. By being one of the first to combine traditional medical practices and holistic therapies, I found many of my colleagues were against my philosophy of integrating the two systems and tried to actively discourage me. I overcame these obstacles by believing in myself and having patience, perseverance as well as the determination to succeed with what I was trying to do. In the end, I have achieved what I set out to do; that is to help thousands of patients.
Helping people to achieve optimum health through a holistic approach gives me such a sense of euphoria and happiness as well as a feeling of fulfilment that I find hard to put into words. I was also delighted to be listed in the Arabian Business feature profiling the 100 smartest people in the UAE in 2017.
I have five key tips:
- Believe in yourself no matter what and don’t listen to others who will tell you that your idea won’t work.
- Never share your business idea with others.
- Be patient.
- Don’t be afraid to fail as failure is a step necessary to success.
- Always learn from other people’s mistakes.
