Katharina Brennan takes us through her career highs and lows.

I grew up and studied in a small town in Germany. I trained to be a hairdresser which taught me the importance of precision, creativity and attention to detail. Since I was young I have been fascinated by makeup, I remember spending all my pocket money on nail polish or the latest lip gloss colour.

While studying hair I also had a lot of exposure to makeup, so I decided to do an additional makeup course. I love that makeup is a form of expression. Even the slightest bit of makeup can transform a woman’s confidence!

Big Break

Initially I wanted to come to Dubai to get some experience working abroad and to improve my English.

Originally the plan was to come for one year and return to Germany. Ten years later I am still here!  I think to move away from home and away from my comfort zone was the best thing that ever happened to me. I felt it was time to make a commitment for my future and who I wanted to become.

Being young and far away from home wasn’t always easy, but it taught me the determination to fight and follow my dream. When I arrived in Dubai nothing was certain, but that also meant that anything was possible!

As a Hair & Makeup Artist, I am inspired by so many people. I love flipping through magazines or browsing the internet and seeing all the incredible work people do. For instance, I love the work of Pat McGrath, Diane Kendal or Peter Philips but what I love about makeup is that the possibilities are endless. You could give five artists the same five products and the looks would all be so different. It’s all about interpretation.

The biggest challenge of my career has been wanting to do EVERTHING. Being a full time hair and makeup artist, a business owner and still having a private life has definitely been a challenge. But sometimes you just have to step back, take a moment to breathe and to accept the fact that you can’t be everywhere at the same time. I am very fortunate to have such amazing support from my family and friends, as well as a brilliant business partner who always has my back.

Even after being in the industry for many years, I still get super excited when I see an editorial printed in a magazine, or a TV commercial which I have worked on. That feeling to create something beautiful within a team makes me very proud.

But certainly a highlight of my career was to start the brand Kitmate with my business partner, Melanie Meyer. Designing and developing a product, using our own expertise as a base, has been such a fantastic experience for both of us. To create something that people love and realising that all your hard work is paying off is certainly a highlight!

Best Advice

The best advice I can give to a budding entrepreneur is to always have persistence and determination.

In the creative industry the hours are long. You must work hard to be successful. But to be inspired you also need to get out there and live life.

Above all, whatever you decide to do in life, make sure it makes you happy.
