Refillable packaging has become a growing trend for many beauty brands in an effort to be more eco-friendly. Starting in October 2019, Olay will be selling its Regenerist Whip moisturiser with a refill pod.
This will give consumers the option to buy the recyclable pod instead of re-purchasing another plastic jar. In a recent press release, the brand stated that it if this shift thrives amongst consumers, it would enable them to save “over 1,000,000 lbs of plastic”.
Additionally, the moisturiser will be shipped in a package made of 100% recycled paper, without an outer carton to decrease usage of paperboard. The refillable pod is also recyclable as it is made from polypropylene.
Other brands such as REN, aim to be entirely ‘zero-waste’ by 2021. By the end of 2019, the personal care brand Unilever, has promised to address plastic consumption in the US by using 50% of post-consumer recycled content for future product launches.
